. Jan 1st 2016 : STUDIO 124 relocated, now STUDIO 124 v.2

Studio 124 v.1 started in 2004. In December 2015 i moved a few blocks away and took the opportunity to make a radical upgrade to adjust my gear to the needs of a fast pace evolving music economy. I decided to get a smaller, more flexible and more portable system, only keeping the high-end hardware tools i was really using daily in the "real life", upgrading my ProTools rig and adding a few top notch outboard goodies. All the hardware analog lovers are forced to admit that some of the Virtual Instruments and plugins come very close to the original and when in a rush you love the fact that a recall is very "instant" if working in the digital world. I had the chance to work for JM Jarre's latest "Electronica" album. That s a good exemple of smart use of analog and digital. And it s the sign of a global move. Pro consoles and outboard gear will remain in studios where you record live drums, bands, orchestras...And on the opposite a boosted laptop will make it for most users.
What do the people i m working with ask for ? Great sounding music, delivered on time (means fast) and affordable. So you have to get the tools of the trade. The range of what i produce at Studio 124 is large : ready to broadcast full mix for TV series, production music, songs, ProTools sessions to be mixed in big studios for films (exactly what happened when working for DreamWorks "Kung Fu Panda 3"),  single tracks i record and send through the internet to clients anywhere in the world. So it varies a lot, and musicians/composers like me have to wear more and more hats. One of them is the hat of mixing and mastering engineer. For all these reasons i stopped using my beloved SSL console and concentrated more on speed mixing "in the box" with a new MacBookPro on steroids , a new ProTools HD Native, Ableton Live Suite, and added some "must haves" like a Manley tube stereo compressor limiter. Of course I kept my great collection of microphones, my best Neve, Api...preamps, Distressors etc...I kept all my "go to" toys, Maschine, various controllers, Komplete Kontrol and an arsenal of SSD drives. For big intensive CPU projects i link the laptop with an MacPro.
So I m all set for 2016 :-)
Happy New Year to you all who read those lines and listen to my music !!!

For the fun of it i'll post a few photos of the highlights of Studio 124 v.1 later.

1- Jean Michel JARRE new album "Electronica"

Jean Michel JARRE gave me the opportunity to be part of his project : ELECTRONICA #1 (and #2 to be released in 2016). How did we proceed ? : JM has been working like crazy for almost 3 years, writing special songs for his guests. He had  each collaborator's personality in mind. Then the "guest" put his own input, it was a ping-pong process, thanks to the Internet, WeTransfer, even if JMJ worked also side by side with each guest. It was mostly Ableton Live sessions sharing and updating till JMJ considered the track was completed and approved too by the guest of course.
Joachim Garraud now living in LA, Marco Grenier, Stephane Gervais (from Canada) and me being part of the production team helping in additional production. As in most cases for big projects like this one, there s no much communication before the album is released, same for blockbuster films, that s why i didn t say much in 2014-2015 about what took me …a lot of Gigas on my hard drives :-) : "The Time Machine" was conceived with Jarre’s wish to encompass the last decades of electronic music with the participation of outstanding artists of all generations with whom Jarre feels especially connected with by a common DNA. The album features 15 different collaborators, including M83, Tangerine Dream, Gesaffelstein, Armin van Buuren, 3D from Massive Attack " and many more as you can check :

1)       The Time Machine (JMJ & Boys Noize)
2)       Glory (JMJ & M83)
3)       Close your eyes (JMJ & AIR
4)       Automatic (part 1) (JMJ & Vince Clarke)
5)       Automatic (part 2) (JMJ & Vince Clarke)
6)       If..! (JMJ & Little Boots)
7)       Immortals (JMJ & Fuck Buttons)
8)       Suns have gone (JMJ & Moby)
9)      Conquistador (JMJ & Gesaffelstein)
10)    Travelator (part 2) (JMJ & Pete Townshend)
11)    Zero Gravity (JMJ & Tangerine Dream)
12)    Rely on me (JMJ & Laurie Anderson)
13)    Stardust (JMJ & Armin van Buuren)
14)    Watching you (JMJ & 3D (Massive Attack))
15)    A question of blood (JMJ & John Carpenter)
16)    The train & the river (JMJ & Lang Lang)

I must thank my good friend Guo Gan, the ehru virtuoso  ( , who connected me to DreamWorks. Guo Gan is among the best erhu (chinese violin) players in the world , Lang Lang who also plays on the soundtrack signed by Hans Zimmer is Guo Gan's best friend.  I had the chance to prepare and record all the ehru parts of Guo Gan for this DreamWorks blockbuster. It gave me the opportunity to experience what it s like to work for the best of the Hollywood scene, DreamWorks and Hans Zimmer !. The experience was very interesting and it s always a treat for a musician to work on great themes, top notch production and have mail exchanges with a dozen people in copy, featuring prestigious names like HZ, Lorne Balfe....and have a team of 5 people (not so common by european standards...and budgets :-) who showed up at my Studio 124-Paris for some photo/video shooting of our session work with Guo Gan and Thomas Farnon for the DVD bonus "behind the scenes" track. Sebastien Christie was of a great help , managing this whole awsome project  from L.A. with great professionalism. Not simple with always those 9 hours time difference. We even had  live Skype exchanges with Lorne who supervised our work at 4am his time :-). I can confirm than in spite of their huge success HZ and Lorne Balfe are far from being "blazé" :-) Music is still a passion for them.

Charlotte Marcos
is a young and talented writer and film director. It was much fun scoring for "Johnny & the Cash", the opportunity for me to use more guitars, ukulele, hawaiian guitar and Johnny Cash "twang" and tremolo Fender guitar parts to help giving the soundtrack a musical identity that fits the film. Not much electronica this time :-)
